It's Raining Speech & Language!

It's raining speech and language! AKA: A super easy and multi-functional task that I have been using with almost my entire caseload!



Simply, cut out raindrops (check out my awesome fine motor skills, ha!) and add them to a wonderfully homemade umbrella and voila! It's raining speech and language!






Here is how I used it in a therapy session:

I've been using my Rainy Day packets as therapy targets :
Rainy Day Articulation
Rainy Day Phonology
Rainy Day Language

ARTICULATION/FLUENCY:
Younger Elementary: First we start off the session by taking data. Everyone has target cards at their spot at the table and I get at least 10 data trials without cues (usually takes 5 minutes for a group of 3 or 4). Then, everyone grabbed a raindrop everyone chooses at least 5 pictures containing their target sound and they draw pictures/write sentences on their raindrop.

Older Elementary:The students are independently drawing pictures/writing sentences of words containing their speech sound. Depending on their writing level, I usually have them write silly sentences by challenging them to create funny sentences that contain at least 3 target words. Next. I pull kids one by one to my "Data Center" (aka my desk) where I get some data without cues, and a little extra assistance for those more difficult words.
For those that finished early, they get a head start on their HOMEWORK.

LANGUAGE:
Younger Elementary: Depending on their goals, students drew pictures of rain day vocabulary (raincoat, boots, umbrella, lightning cloud, etc.) Then we would describe the items using the EET concepts, used the items in sentences, described pictures from Rainy Day Language using pronouns etc.
Older Elementary: We looked at pictures and made inferences as to the Who, What, Where, When and Why.

SOCIAL SKILLS:
Younger Elementary: We drew unthinkables and examples of body/brain in, and out of the group, and whole body listening.
Older Elementary: We wrote examples of questions you could ask based on certain conversational topics. We also drew a picture of higher level emotions (confused, frustrated, guilty). Also, we looked at pictures and made inferences about the emotions of the people in the pictures. How were they feeling? What made you think they were feeling that way?
